Common eye conditions

What is short sightedness (myopia)?

This condition affects your ability to see things in the distance clearly, as the light entering your eyes is focussed in front of the retina.

What is long sightedness (hyperopia)?

With long-sightedness, incoming light is focussed behind the retina causing problems with seeing things clearly up-close. It can cause eye strain as you get older.

What is astigmatism?

Eyeballs are normally spherical but with astigmatism, they are more like the shape of a rugby ball. This irregularity in the curvature of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) can cause blurring and eye strain at all distances.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a natural part of growing older and occurs when your eyes start struggling to bring close objects into clear focus. It will be familiar to many over the age of 40, who start finding menus hard to read in dimly-lit restaurants, or have to hold mobile phones and newspapers at arm’s length to read them.
